BSGC Recorded History

For those of you who love too much information, here is a list of all BSGC programs and workshops from the beginning of time. If you catch me in a mistake, please let me know. This was great fun to compile and to see our evolution. (Judith Schwab)

* 2004

January 8-annual group wide discussion and Show and Tell
February 12-Nicole Anderson delivered Luigi Catalan’s paper on the history of the Venetian Glass Seed Bead Industry.

March 11- Stefany Tomalin, head bead of the Bead Society of Great Britian, spoke on “The Emancipation of Beads in 20th Century Fashion.

April 8-Pat Jordan spoke about the art, the culture and the lives of the Hill Tribe people of Thailand and the production of the beads and pendants which are so popular, After spending a lot of time there, he has become an importer of their work and is now having some of his designs created by them.

May 13-Sonya Clark spoke about her Beaded Prayer Packets Project which began with a BSGC workshop and ended with a project with thousands of entries which traveled extensively.

June 10- Gwen Blakley Kinsler and Susan Lutz Kenyon, BSGC members, spoke about the Rhythm of Crochet, a juried 2003 traveling exhibit which challenged traditional expectations and included several beaded pieces.

January 9-annual group-wide discussion and Show and Tell

January Workshop-Dona Anderson-Swiderek taught “Marriage of Metal and Beads Bracelet”.

February 13-Jean Campbell, editor of Beadwork Magazine, presented “Ins and Outs of Beadwork”
February workshop- Jean Campbell taught Mousies, a sculptural peyote stitch class.

March 13-Valerie Hector spoke about The Art of Beadwork, her book which will be out in 2004.

April 10-Robin Atkins presented a talk on facilitating the exploration of creativity, especially through improvisational bead embroidery
April workshops- Suzanne Golden taught “Rainbow-Colored Tubular Netted Bracelet and Peyote Spiral Bracelet workshops.

May 8-Barbara McGuire presented “Development of a Design”.

May Workshop-Barbara McGuire taught Designing a Display.

June 12-Cindy Jenkins presented an overview of contemporary glass bead making showing slides that have been sent to her for inclusions in her books.

September 11-Judy Zeddies and Nancy Walters were the members who presented their work.

October 9-Laura Beaslet discussed sequin and beaded Haitian Vodou flags. Her talked about African origins and religious roots. She is the owner of Ridge Art in Oak Park.

November 13-J. Mark Kenoyer presented his slide show on “New Perspectives on Beads in Ancient and Historical South Asian.” He spoke about recent discoveries he made on Khambhat bead trade.

December 9 was the annual auction and holiday party.

* 2002

January 10-Society wide discussion and Show & Tell

February 14-Deborah Stokes presented “Dress Codes/African Beadwork: Adornment and Identity” which examined the artistic traditions of beadwork in sub-Saharan Africa as expressed through ritual dress, spiritual affiliation and personal identity.

March 14-Larry Scott presented “Searching for a Positive Definition of Craft, or It’s hard to have 12 things on your mind when you only have two hands.”

April 11-Arline Fisch presented “Textile Techniques in Metal.’ A slide survey of the development of her research into the use of textile structures in metal, illustrated with her work and that of other artists.
April Workshop-Arline Fisch taught Knitting and Crochet in Wire.

May 9-David Dean spoke on “How to Research Beadwork” with an emphasis on Native American Beadwork
May Workshop taught three: A Watchband Class, a Keychain Class and Combination Basket and Tassel Techniques Class.

June 13-Mary Ann Hickey presented a slide presentation on her body of work that was based on family photo archives.
June Workshops-Theresa Guthrie taught No Warps! and Loom Sampler workshops.
September 12- Eve Alfille, president of Pearl Society introduced us to The Pearl Exhibit at the Field Museum.

October 10-Kenneth King’s slide presentation/lecture was entitled “The Creative Process or Creativity is the Opposite of Fear!”
October Workshop was Kenneth King’s Embroidering with Beads.

November 14 was Members’ Night and Chris Ann Phillips presented her work.

December 12 was Holiday Auction and Party

May Workshops- Lynn Merchant taught Beads 1 and Findings, both two day workshops.

June 14-performance by Sha Sha Higby, performance artist who uses costumes and music to produce a theatrical program full of shapes, sensations, noise and artistry.
